December 13, 2011 - The Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Sustainable Communities hosted a roundtable discussion with a select group of business leaders and experts in real estate and economic development. Bill Fulton, GOVERNING magazine's economic development columnist and former mayor of the city of Ventura, California, moderated this daylong event that explored the market-based opportunities and challenges to implementing sustainable community development approaches.
 
The agenda included a presentation of the latest research on the economic impacts of smart growth for real estate developers, investors, business leaders, and communities.
 
Topics covered included:
  • How does smart growth and sustainable development generate positive economic returns?
  • What are the other benefits of smart growth and sustainable development for real estate developers and investors?
  • What else do economic development professionals and business leaders need to know about the advantages of smart growth and sustainable development for creating strong, vibrant communities?

December 6-7, 2011 -
The Healthy Economy and Environment Conference was held in Albany, NY. ASBC was a co-sponsor.

Business leaders, agency staff, policy makers, researchers, educators, and advocates joined to pursue sustainable solutions to drive economic development in our state. The conference featured a keynote address by David Calligeros, Founder of Remains Lighting in Brooklyn, NY; case studies from New York State businesses; NYS Environmental Excellence Awards Presentation; panel workshops including "The Power of Green Purchasing," "Public Policy as an Innovation Driver," "Leading with Safer Materials," and "Avoiding 'Regrettable Substitutions'"; in-depth discussions about what New York needs in order to move forward.

November 17-18, 2011 -Catamount Institute Sustainability Conference, Colorado Springs, CO. ASBC lead a session on "Building a Sustainable Economy through Public Policy."

November 10, 2011 - The 2011 Green Jobs Award Reception was held in New York City. Jonathan Greenblatt, Director of the White House Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation, gave the keynote address.

November 5, 2011 - November 5 was set as a day to encourage moving your money from a large, money center bank to a local bank or credit union so we can help to make sure that the money goes to work in your community, building jobs and a sustainable society. Credit unions typically serve mostly individual consumers while community banks tend to focus more on smaller, local businesses; both could use the additional deposit funds to create more loans for their respective markets.

September 23, 2011 - ASBC Executive Director David Levine spoke at "Unleashing Green Chemistry and Engineering in Service of a Sustainable Future," sponsored by EPA Region 2 and the EPA Office of Research and Development. The event took place at the National Museum of the American Indian in New York City.


September 14, 2011 - Green America Local Green Business Showcase & Happy Hour. Denise Hamler hosted the event on September 14th profiling three local green businesses: Candle Café, Restore Clothing, and Sustainable NYC.

June 16, 2011 - ASBC Executive Director David Levine participated in a panel on Sustainable Business at the BALLE Conference in Bellingham, WA. June 9, 2011 - The Safer Chemicals in Products Forum gathered leaders from businesses, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and governments to find common ground in the movement to use inherently safer chemicals in products. A lobby day and briefing was held on June 10.

March 14, 2011 - Dave Rappaport, Sr. Director of Corporate Consciousness at Seventh Generation, Barry A. Cik, Board Certified Environmental Engineer and Technical Director at Naturepedic, and David Levine, Executive Director of the American Sustainable Business Council (ASBC) hosted a webinar focused on the prevalence of toxic chemicals in consumer products, what leading sustainability companies are doing to provide safer alternatives, and what public policy can do to help chemical producers and manufacturers transition to greener alternatives.

February 2-3, 2011 - ASBC led workshops on "Building a Sustainable Economy through Public Policy" at the State of Green Business Forum 2011: San Francisco.

January 24- 27, 2011 - ASBC was a proud co-sponsor of the Healthy Money Seminar, a free four-day event focusing on how to create a happier, healthier, and more productive relationship with money. The event was hosted by Vicki Robin, bestselling author of Your Money or Your Life, and featured Riane Eisler, Lynne Twist, John Robbins, Satish Kumar, Hazel Henderson, David Korten, Alisa Gravitz, and many others.

January 21, 2011 - On the one-year anniversary of the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission Supreme Court decision, ASBC helps launch the Business for Democracy campaign. Read full press release.

January 13, 2011 - The FDIC hosted a forum entitled, "Overcoming Obstacles to Small Business Lending," which brought together policy makers, regulators, small business owners, lenders, and other stakeholders to identify key issues and focus on solutions aimed at making
credit more accessible to the small business sector.

Moderated by CNBC, the event was scheduled to include a panel discussion with FDIC Chairman Sheila C. Bair, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke, U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner, and Thomas D. Bell Jr., Chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Following this first panel, additional government and private sector leaders (including Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee Spencer Bachus  and Karen Mills, administrator for the Small Business Administration) continued the discussion, identifying issues constraining the availability of credit to small businesses and articulating ideas for overcoming these obstacles.

January 7, 2011 - Jeffrey Hollender, the Chair of ASBC's Business Leadership Council, visited Denver in January to meet with local business leaders. John Powers, Founder of the Alliance for Sustainable Colorado hosted the event at his loft, while Jenn Orgolini (pictured, left) and Kim Jordan (right) of New Belgium Brewery provided the beer.

November 20, 2010
- ASBC was a proud co-sponsor of the 30th Annual E.F. Schumacher Lectures: "Voices of a New Economics," featuring ASBC Advisory Board Member Gus Speth, along with Stewart Wallis, Executive Director of London's New Economics Foundation, and Neva Goodwin, Co-Director of the Global Development and Environment Institute at Tufts University.

November 18, 2010 - A contingent from ASBC attended the SEC's 2010 Government-Business Forum on Small Business Capital Formation.


November 18, 2010 - Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., Chair of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, held a hearing on "Next Steps for Main Street: Reducing the Regulatory and Administrative Burdens on America's Small Businesses," which gave small businesses the opportunity to discuss federal regulations resulting from labor and workplace safety laws, environmental protection laws, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Committee also discussed the Form 1099 reporting requirement taking effect in 2012.

- The 21st Annual SRI in the Rockies Conference was held at the JW Marriott Hill Country in San Antonio, Texas. SRI in the Rockies is the premier annual gathering of investors and investment professionals who work to direct the flow of investment capital in more positive, healthy, and transformative ways.

November 8-10, 2010 - Marc Thibault, CEO & Founder, Green Age 360 and ASBC's leader on West Coast Engagement, moderated a panel at The Global Summit II, "How business and government sustainability policies are shaping the market: a workshop on Corporate Social Responsibility, Government Policies and Advocacy" featuring David Brodwin, Co-Founder of the American Sustainable Business Council; Melanie Nutter, Director, Department of the Environment, City and County of San Francisco; Bonnie Nixon, Code Green, former HP Director of Environmental Sustainability and Global Citizenship; and Ahmed Rahim, Founder and CEO Numi Tea.

October 28, 2010 - ASBC hosted a reception at Snooze Restaurant in Denver, Colorado.The host committee included Richard Eidlin, Andrew Kassoy, Blake Jones, John Powers, Steve Schueth, Jennifer Orgolini, Adam Schlegel, Jacqui Dietrich, and the Mile High Business Alliance.

June 19, 2010 -
ASBC supported SolarDay 2010, a national green day of recognition for solar energy, sustainability, energy independence, and protection of the planet. In celebration, energy conservation events took place in cities around the United States.

June 3-4, 2010 - ASBC co-hosted a Business Symposium for Chemicals Policy Reform where over 100 business leaders discussed strategies for overhauling the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Bob Sussman, U.S. EPA’s Senior Counsel, and Robin Appleberry, Counsel, House Energy and Commerce Committee called for downstream users to join the debate.  Chemical Watch covered the event. 

May 26, 2010
- ASBC hosted a webinar on REACH, the European Union’s chemicals policy reform legislation.  The webinar covered lessons from our European counterparts’ success following a seven-year-long campaign. (See presentation)

April 26, 2010 - ASBC hosted a public discussion in San Francisco on "Business Leadership and the Movement for a Vibrant, Just, and Sustainable Economy" with Jeffrey Hollender, co-founder of Seventh Generation. 

April 20, 2010 - David Brodwin, co-founder of ASBC, discussed the role of business in promoting a more vibrant, just and sustainable economy at the Spring 2010 Conference and Venture Fair of Investor's Circle, at the Westin Hotel in San Francisco.

April 2, 2010 - David Brodwin introduced the American Sustainable Business Council and discussed the role of sustainable business in policy change at the monthly meeting of Sustainable Business Alliance in Berkeley, CA.
