Financial Reform: July 2010

Thanks to an outpouring of support from the public, small business leaders, consumer advocates, unions, and others, financial reform legislation was passed by Congress and the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act was signed into law by President Obama on July 21, 2010! The American Sustainable Business Council, with Business for Shared Prosperity at the lead and Americans for Financial Reform, succeeded in bringing the voice of sustainable businesses to Capitol Hill in support of fundamental financial reform. Our coalition of business networks persisted in being heard over the din created by the mega-banks and U.S. Chamber of Commerce, who poured millions of dollars into the debate. ASBC is especially pleased that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was incorporated into the final legislation. Since Fall 2009 the network has been advocating for the creation of such an independent agency aimed at protecting consumers and small businesses from predatory financial products and services.

UPDATE:
ASBC sent a letter to President Obama urging him to officially nominate Elizabeth Warren as Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) by July 21, 2011, the designated transfer date when the CFPB assumes consumer protection responsibilities currently held by other federal agencies. ASBC supported Ms. Warren’s initial nomination in July 2010 when her appointment was under consideration.

White House Letter: March 31, 2009

The American Sustainable Business Council and 1300 business executives, social entrepreneurs, and others committed to building an equitable and sustainable economy issued this letter to The White House Office of Public Liaison, The Office of Social Innovation and Civic Engagement and The Council on Environmental Quality. This first ASBC action in Washington was met with a positive response and provided momentum for sustained collective and cooperative action on behalf of the principles the coalition supports.
