Business Leaders Applaud Pause on Dangerous Liquefied Natural Gas Projects

Media Release Michael Green

The American Sustainable Business Network, an organization representing thousands of business owners and investors, today celebrated the Biden-Harris administration’s pause on exports from new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) projects. In its decision, the administration cited the impact of greenhouse gas emissions as well as the health risks that new export facilities pose to frontline communities.

“The pause on new Liquified Natural Gas exports is a major step forward in our collective efforts to address the massive threats posed by the climate crisis and continue the momentum for our transition away from fossil fuels to a clean energy future” said Michael Green, ASBN Climate and Energy Chair.

LNG is natural gas that has been cooled to a liquid state (about -260° F) for shipping and storage. Future new exports would require more new fossil fuel infrastructure such as pipelines and fuel ports, all of which would be at the expense of frontline communities and continue global reliance on fossil fuels. LNG pipelines and terminals endanger nearby communities by releasing harmful pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds, nitrogen oxides, and benzene.

Green noted that ASBN supports a rapid transition away from fossil fuels towards a clean energy economy. “Pausing LNG projects is an important first step,” he said. “But the U.S. must also make meaningful investments in clean and renewable envergy, weatherization and other energy efficiency measures, and distributed energy systems that enable local communities to build a climate-resilient, equitable, and thriving local economy.”
